“Ethics is nothing else than reverence for life.” - Albert Schweitzer
Ask a member of a Boy Scout Troop what the Scout law is, and he will immediately recite “A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.”
I believe it can and should serve as the guiding principles for a business owner, as well. There isn’t a point in the entire Scout Law that doesn’t serve an entrepreneur well, either as a business or as a person of integrity. Today, I’d like to focus on the twelfth and final point – Reverence.
Some might question whether this point in the Scout Law applies in a business setting in a secular world. I believe it means living ethically, taking the time to truly discover your core values, and making the effort to live those values, even when it’s hard. I believe it means being authentic and operating with integrity. If you are a person of faith, it means living your faith, not in an obnoxious way, but quietly giving witness to your beliefs.
This involves showing deep respect, honor, and admiration for others, including employees, customers, stakeholders, and the community. It also entails recognizing the value of traditions, ethics, and diversity. Some ways a business owner can demonstrate ethical living and reverence:
Respect for Employees: Treat employees with dignity and value their contributions to the business. Create a supportive and inclusive work environment where everyone feels appreciated and respected.
Listening and Empathy: Be attentive to the needs and concerns of employees and customers. Practice active listening and show empathy towards their perspectives and experiences.
Valuing Customers: Put the needs and satisfaction of customers first. Provide excellent customer service and strive to exceed their expectations.
Honoring Traditions: Respect and preserve the business's founding principles, traditions, and values. Recognize the importance of the company's history and its impact on its identity.
Responsible Leadership: Lead with integrity and humility, and set a positive example for others to follow. Make decisions that align with ethical principles and promote responsible business practices.
Ethical Marketing: Conduct marketing and advertising with honesty and transparency, avoiding deceptive practices.
Community Involvement: Engage with the local community and contribute positively to its well-being. Support local causes, charities, and initiatives that align with the company's values.
Social Responsibility: Engage in socially responsible initiatives, supporting the community and causes aligned with the company's values.
Supporting Employee Growth: Encourage and invest in the professional development and personal growth of employees. Provide opportunities for learning and advancement within the company.
Recognizing Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments and milestones of employees and the business as a whole. Express gratitude and recognition for hard work and dedication.
Mindful Decision-Making: Make decisions thoughtfully, considering their potential impact on employees, customers, and the broader community.
Honoring Commitments: Keep promises and commitments made to employees, customers, and partners. Reliability and trustworthiness are essential aspects of reverence.
Respecting Personal Balance: Recognize that everyone has a life outside of work, and support employees in maintaining a healthy equilibrium between their personal and professional lives.
Fostering a Culture of Respect: Promote a company culture that values respect and empathy towards others. Encourage employees to demonstrate that respect in their interactions with each other and with customers.
By embodying this principle, you create a positive and compassionate workplace that nurtures employee well-being, fosters customer loyalty, and contributes positively to the broader community. It also helps to build a strong and reputable brand that customers and employees can trust and respect.
