“When I get on stage, my first goal is not to show my expertise, but on the contrary, to give a bit of happiness, of joy, of cheerfulness. I am firmly convinced that in order to sing well, you must love your neighbor and be passionate about life.” - Andrea Bocelli
I believe it can and should serve as the guiding principles for a business owner, as well. There isn’t a point in the entire Scout Law that doesn’t serve an entrepreneur well, either as a business or as a person of integrity. Today, I’d like to focus on the eighth point - Cheerfulness.
I was walking through a parking lot one evening recently, and crossed paths with an elderly fellow coming out of a take-out restaurant. I nodded and said hi, and he flashed this BIG generous grin, and said "How are you doing tonight," in a tone of voice that suggested he REALLY meant it. It made me smile, and I immediately noticed that I felt better.
What really stood out though – I was reading Matthew Kelly’s "Generosity Habit" book, a page a day, and it just so happened that the habit the next day was... to smile generously! Not just a polite smile, but a look-'em-in-the-eyes-and-make-their-day smile. It can immediately lift the other person's spirits. And that's just what I experienced that evening!
As a business owner, there are many ways you can be cheerful and create a positive atmosphere in your business. Some ideas:
Greet customers with enthusiasm: Greet your customers with a cheerful tone and enthusiastic attitude. This can help create a welcoming and positive atmosphere that puts people at ease.
Use positive language: Use positive language when interacting with customers and employees. This can help create a positive atmosphere and make people feel more comfortable.
Smile and be enthusiastic: Smile and greet your customers and employees with enthusiasm. A warm smile and a cheerful tone can go a long way in creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Celebrate successes: Celebrate your business's successes and milestones with your employees and customers. Recognize achievements, share positive news, and spread good vibes around. This can help create a positive atmosphere and boost morale.
Show appreciation: Show appreciation for your customers and employees by saying "thank you," providing compliments, and offering rewards and incentives for their loyalty and hard work.

Being cheerful should be a genuine reflection of your business culture and values. By prioritizing cheerful interactions with your customers and employees, you can create a positive and uplifting atmosphere that benefits your business in the long term.
So, when was the last time you smiled generously to someone you didn’t know? It may have been a new prospect, or it may have a complete stranger on the sidewalk. How did it make them feel? How did it make YOU feel?
